Picked up some tri tips this morning at the local restuarant supply store. 2.92 per lb for 4 untrimmed ones in a pack. These are bigger tri tips than I usually see. About 4.5 lbs untrimmed and 3.5 lbs after I trimmed some of the fat. It was almost an inch thick on top.

Trimmed for the smoker

I used the Smoke & Spice wonderful rub and also did ABTs, a fatty, and some kielbasa.

2nd smoke with the silver smoker and I am learning. My baffle mod really helped stabilized the temps.

All done. Pulled at 150 and let it rest in foil for 30 mins.

The tri tip was juicy but the inner parts of the meat didn't taste like much. I have done lots on the grill I those turned out better with a red wine, olive oil, onion, garlic, rosemary, salt, and pepper marinade. But not bad.

Anyone try marinading these before smoking?

Nice lookin' tri-tip and awesome smoke ring. I trim mine up also since it makes no sense to me to cook something I'm not going to eat. I've never tried a marinade, although I just might since I'm getting bored doing em the same way.

Looks great! I love tri-tip but it is a bit hard to find around where I live. My butcher tells me it is more of a mid-west cut.

When I do mine I eject them with some of my marinade as well as soaking for a day or two. Lately I have even started to vacuum seal them while marinating.

Good jobs on the first!

Nice lookin dinner....But what is a tri tip? doesn't look familiar and have never seen it here in central NY
