If I can get the MODS done for this weekend, I'm going to try to get my first smoke on. Any recommendations on what would be a good first smoke. I don't want it to be too involved or expensive in case I ruin it, which by what I have read here, everyone ruins their first.
Chicken, cornish hens, meatloaf are all fairly quick. Maybe try some ABT as well.

What Ron50 said.
Or try a pork butt, easy & hard to kill. Smoke it to 200 & pull it.
We all eat our mistakes you know. Sometimes the dog helps.
Pork butt is a really good choice , very easy and forgiving. Not to mention it is a crowd pleaser.
Ron50 pretty much nailed it. You could do some chicken and a couple fattys. One of my favorite inexpensive things to smoke are boneless, skinless chicken breasts. I like to give them a coat of extra virgin olive oil, give em a good coat of a rub or whatever spices I want and smoke them to 165 degrees internal. Usually takes about 2 hours at 250 degrees smoke time, give or take a few minutes. I make a mix of whatever rub or spices I'm using in with some olive oil and brush them on each turn on the half hour. Sometimes I add some q sauce about 30-45 minutes prior to pulling them off. They are fork tender. There are many different ways to smoke them and it's fun to experiment. Whatever you decide, keep us posted!
Gotta do some Fattys!!!

Something magical about what happens to a simple roll of sausage when it is smoked.....makes you want to "Q" a couple every time you light up the smoker. is reader supported and as an Amazon Associate, we may earn commissions from qualifying purchases.
