I went to see The Boondock Saints 2 yesterday (awesome movie) and on the way home I passed by a huge Asian market so I stopped to browse.
I came across something that I just had to buy becuase I have never tried it before and it was just a really weird item.
Preserved duck eggs, those black eggs that you would see on fear factor except these weren't fermented only preserved.

As soon as I took them out of the plastic I could tell this wasn't going to be fun, even through the shell they stunk.
Decided if I was going to do this I was going to do it right so I threw a couple of them into the smoker over pecan for about 45 minutes.
Here they are out of the smoker

Here is where things start to get bad, peeled and sliced pics and yes, that is runny yolk in the middle.

Looks yummy right?

So with the foul aroma wafting up towards me I sprinkled with a bit of salt and lots of pepper

The verdict? Not something I would consider good. No offense to anyone who may actually enjoy these things but the texture/flavor and especially the smell were all pretty bad. Did the smoke help? I don't know, at that point I don't think anything could have helped.
I thought about picking up a few more boxes and sending them to some members but figured that just wouldn't be a nice thing to do.
My apologies to anyone who may have gagged over this post but at least you didn't have to eat it

I've seen folks eat these and smelled them, too. No thanks. Yes, they are good food in some societies, and have had friends who liked them; however comma not me.

You're a brave fellow, Jim. Lesson learned, right ?

Those eggs look really nasty, but please tell me a little bit about the movie. Being overseas this probably won't get here for about another month. I loved the first one and I am really looking forward to seeing this one.

Wow Fire...You are a brave man.

I travelled to Taiwan on a two week business trip a few years back, and I have to tell you I'm glad that I found a market with fruit and yogurt, because I lost 10 lbs on my trip the way it was. Normal meals were OK, but business meals were where they wanted to show their appreciation for you being there, and that is where the really freaky "delicacies" came out. The differences in cultures was amazing to me.

You might have been better off smoking that styrofoam tray that they came in and eating that LOL. I have heard of people eating them, and I have tried some pretty far out stuff in Korea including live eel, but I would have to pass on those i think.

Same thing my BIL told me, he tried all kinds of weird stuff in Korea but wouldn't try the egg.
Out of all who tried it I was the only one who was actually able to choke it down.

Wow - Can't beleive you could get those down. I guess if you were OK to actually buy them you would have to try them. LOL

No.

And thanks to your post, I never will. LOL Dang, you're a braver man than me for even putting that thing to your lips.

Still got a few left Jay and I would be more than willing to ship you out a few, hell, I might even pay you to take them off my hands, should have given them out at Halloween.
I've tried a few different odd things but these were by far the strangest but I figured if I didn't try them I would never know, right? For all I knew I was going to love them, glad that didn't happen but you never know...

Hey Jim,

Don't throw them away! Here is what you do, put 'em outside and see if the ants eat them, heh, heh. That's how the Tahitians test for poisonous fish, cut off the tail and sit back and watch, if the ants don't eat it then they are poisonous, ...the moral of the story, if the ants don't eat the eggs, ...you just ate poison.

Sorry bro, ...and you just became a knight too, that calls for brownie points (hopefully not post-humous) for chivalrous acts above and beyond the call of duty,

.............congrats on the knighthood.

Gene
