I recently purchased my first piece of enameled cast iron cookware (dutch oven). I was looking over the directions and it says not to use it in a smoker. Do bad things happen to enameled cast iron in a smoker?

IDK the answer to your question, but at the risk of answering a question with a question....why would you want too? I would think it would severely impede smoke penetration? no disrespect, just my thought and curiosity.

Not sure about a smoker, but wifey not happy with the discoloring from the high temps involved with sour dough bread baking.

I would fry onions and bacon in the dutch oven, dump in my favorite baked bean recipe, and smoke it @ 350. Chili much the same. Brown a chuck roast in the dutch oven, throw in the veggies and beef stock, and smoke.

OK, I would smoke in a foil pan, but that is me...YMMV. Whatever you do, please post up with pics for a great thread.

I had a guy from New Zealand make a lasagne in one. Wonder if it has to do with the lower temp of a smoker. I've only seen them over direct or highish (?) heat.

Never used my enameled dutch oven in the smoker. But I have used my cast iron one. I smoked a chuck roast then put it in the DO with other stuff to make pulled beef sandwiches, they were great Hahaha! Only thing I can think with the enameled is discoloring, it won't hurt the enameling as far as I know. If you don't mind it getting discolored I say go for it.

I was reading something about the finish popping or cracking when used in a " smoker " . Smoker could mean campfire cooking ? I would think as long as you stay below oven temps you won't get any damage . Staining is a different story .
I am about to find that out in the next couple weeks when the starter gets rolling.
Get a silicone sling . I just needed the sling , but bought this kit .

I've been thinking about getting one but haven't convinced myself yet. How do you like it and how often do you use it?

I have a non enameled one I use in smoker and grill. I think the smoke smell is permanently imbedded in it. No matter how I clean it the outside will black your hands or pot holders also.

I also agree that smoke will effect the outside enamel. Probably best for inside cooks to keep outside pretty.

I just ordered a Cowboy Kent style 9 Qt camp dutch oven to use over my pit. I don't think my wife would be too happy if I used one of her enamel ones.

A small update. I just got it in. The quality looks good so far. The main pot and the lid both have standoff legs so they can sit above the charcoal. The lid can also double as a skillet. It also included a tool to lift the lid from the pot which is good since they are both very heavy. Around 20Lbs total.

Nice design on the top.

It is pre-seasoned and ready to use.
