I have a 250gal oil drum I want to cut. Its drained and has been empty for a while. It had no. 2 fuel oil in it. I have read on here about cutting propane tanks, and didn't know if I should follow the same procedures, or I could just cut it. Thanks for any help.

I guess let me clarify:
Saw? I'd go ahead and cut. The flash point of #2 is pretty high, and not enough heat would be generated to be a problem.

Torch/Grinder? I'd punch a couple holes in the area to be removed, or open where there already IS an opening and add some detergent and water, and roll 'er around a bit. Empty it out. That'll pretty much bind up the oil and not allow a large concentration of fuel oil vapor to build up before you get a decent sized cut made.

Either way- as soon as ya can..BURN THE SUCKER OUT!

I have welded on tanks with diesel in them. The trick is not to weld above the diesel level. It is the vapor that explodes and kills. Rich gave you some pretty good advice. You might also use your vehicle and a hose to run exhaust thru the tank for 30 minutes or so to be safe.

I helped a co-worker cut a diesel tank for a large trailer mount cooker. We used cutoff wheels on a 4" grinder,..worked good but went through several wheels. Don't cut it all at once,..leave it attached in a few places until you have the major perimeter cut. If you don't it becomes very difficult to handle.
What are you doing for a firebox?

I survived, My buddy Blake and I got it cut with no problem. I plan on making a reverse flow. I have some quarter inch plate I plan on making a fire box out of. I will send progress pics.
