Cover for smoker

How important is it to cover a smoker when not in use? I just got a new OKJ highland reverse flow and I obviously want to take care of it. The smoker sits outside in the elements. I live in Maryland so we have hot humid summers, wet springs, and occasional snow in the winter. Should I cover it with a cover or just make sure I oil the inside and outside occasionally? I'm concerned that a cover may actually trap moisture and do more harm than good.

They do . If you don't use it on regular basis , you need to uncover them when you have a few days of good weather . That way they air out . I have all mine uncovered right now , since it finally stopped raining . Probably going to light a fire in the kettles just to heat things up .

Cover it! I have had a Weber gasser for decades - I keep it covered anytime its not in use. Same with my Rec Teq. 10 years, covered through all kinda of adverse condition. Covers are worth the investment 100% of the time

I looked at the one for my smoker but I'm wondering if there would be an issue with the 18" extension I have on the stack. Any thoughts?

I would contact them , and ask . The dimensions say 4' 6" x 11' 5" x 10" high . I'm assuming the stack height cover is 10" . Looks like it's removable , but I don't know that for sure .
Contact them and see what the say , or can do . I would think it would be an easy work around .

For my big smoker, I use the canvas part of a 12'x12' pop-up canopy. I left it up one time and a storm blew in. Wrecked the frame so I kept the tent part and use it. Another option is a tarp and bungie cords, but I'd cover it...

I have a Chargriller Grandchamp and cover it when not in use. I think covering a COS is a good Idea as the metal is thin and you want to prolong the life as long as possible. I use an extension on mine also but it is removable so I just put it in the cook chamber when not cooking. Is your stack extension removable? Plus I live in Hawaii so if I didn't cover it the salt air would kill it quickly!! Hahaha!

If you can't get a custom fit cover,a FEMA cover (akk blue tarp) over it secured with bungee cords will work fine
