I am nearing completion of my hot smokehouse. I have used three-quarter inch cedar both inside and outside of my frame. My wife would like me to make it a little more fire proof by adding protection inside. Is concrete board acceptable to use or is there another, medium, that people suggest? She’s worried about chemicals that might leach off of concrete board, so I’m looking for suggestions to line the inside with. After I put whatever layer I’m going to, whether it is concrete board or something else, I’m going to put a layer of quarter inch or thinner aluminum flashing just to help keep uniform heat within. Anyhow, I welcome advice and suggestions both with the insulated layer being attached to the inside walls which are cedar, and or whether I should use aluminum flashing or something else on top to help with uniform heat throughout. As always, thanks for your advice and suggestions!

If you have a remote firebox, my opinion is you don’t need any additional protection inside the smokehouse. Although I have no idea the dimensions of your smokehouse nor the high temps you want to run. These parameters could change things, but generally with a remote firebox there are no worries.

I have a 3x3x7’ smokehouse with a propane burner inside and did use Hardi-backer concrete board on the bottom 3’ of the box. Others here have wooden smokehouses and Hardi-backed the whole inside, still others use metal like Pro panel inside.

My dimensions are the size of yours. I have cinderblocks too high on the ground, with a 6 foot cedar box that is 3‘ x 3‘. I am probably going to be running temps perhaps up to 250° but who knows, May not be that high, or could get up to 300°.

I personally would not go about 275*F with a wood smokehouse. I agree with SE, if you have a remote smoke box, you likely so not need the concrete board.

I did line my wood smokehouse with concrete board, but I use propane inside the smokehouse.

I do appreciate your input!

okay, that is helpful. My wife is concerned I’m going to burn the place down so just trying to make sure I keep things safe. I probably will do the aluminum flashing just so I can get more convection and get uniform heat throughout the house. Really appreciate your input!
