When entering competitive cooking events sanctioned by the KCBS, are you required to enter all 4 meat catagories and be a team of more than 1 person or can an individual enter by there self and only enter 1 or 2 meat catagories? I would like to enter but don't really have a team to help and won't be able to cook everything.

I haven't competed but have read alot about it. You can make what you want, just ribs if you want. They vote for the best in each meat, then the best overall.

You can have a 1 man team, no problem. I don't know if there is a limit to how many you can have, but I assume as many as can fit in your "booth" area.

That is the way I understand it.

May I ask, why not turn in an entry for each meat?

Being that this will be my first time out, I don't want to take on more than I can handle on my first time. I can handle 2 different things but really don't want to press my luck just yet.

Generally you can just enter whatever catagories you want (although a specific contest my have exceptions to that) just to be considered for the overall Grand Champion, you have to enter all. Most charge you $ per catagory entered. I am cooking in an FBA contest this Friday/Saturday and the entry was $50 per catagory.........so it will cost you $200 to have a shot at the GC...........Then there are folks like me who enter all the catagories, pay the money, and still don't have shot, but that is a different story. LOL

Doing one catagory will give you a feel for how things work as well as for how competive your product is.

You can enter by yourself, just pay your money and get your entry done and turned in on time.

Like Texas-Hunter said, practice at home and make sure you can get your stuff done on time........including making the presentation in the box, cooking is just part of it.

Good luck.

I sure appreciate it Joe. Do they usually have a specific starting time for all catagories or different for each one or since they have the judging times set you start according to that?

Chicken at noon
Ribs at 12:30
Pork at 1:00
Brisket at 1:30

Turn in is 5 minutes before and 5 minutes after. So for chicken you can turn it in from 11:55 - 12 :05.............12:06 and you are too late.

Stay away from a KCBS event, you have to pay full price, you might as well cook all 4 catagorie's...
Having never even done brisket, i would say find some backyard comp's in your area for starter's and go from there!!
If you can, find a team and join them for a weekend and learn the rope's, in the meantime, go to the KCBS webpage and start reading the rule's!!

I was, but I wanted to start this thread about competing. I am pondering if I want to do a brisket or something else. Don't know the ends and outs of competing.

Cook I want to wish you well. It is quite an undertaking at any event. KCBS sanctioned ones can be even tuffer. Not to discourage you but, you might do as Bubba said and look around for a team to join for a bit. Or find a smaller competition to start with.
The last KCBS comp I was checking out, cost was the same for one meat or all four. Helpers would certainly be needed.
No matter what just remember to have fun.

Cook, start practice NOW!!! Grab a drink'n buddie and go for the gold! What do ya have to loose? Knowledge?

Wing it! Don't expect to get 1st place, but expect to gain a TON of knowledge!

Suck it up Nancy and go for it! Do us all proud! First or last, at least you did it and will learn something for the next comp.

Good luck

PM Bubba, he's been there, done that.

This will be my 3rd year competing in KCBS contests. The best advice I can give you is to look at the entryform and then call the contact person and ask them if your able to enter just on catagory or not.

In the three years I have competited I have entered all 4 catagories. If you want the grand champ or rankings for that you HAVE to enter all 4 catagories.

I've been at contests where people have just entered the salsa catagory, or just ribs, so you can do that, wither you have to pay the full entry price is going to depend on the contest , but it is usually all there on the entry form so you can send it and your cash in for the contest. Hope this makes sense, if I can answer any other questions on competiting send me an email.
