CGSP firebox mod

  1. Plenty of good ideas presented thus far for the charcoal basket mod, but one thing I noticed that has kinda thrown me for a loop, the previous owner of this fine CG smoker did not install the grate holders, (i.e rails) across the inside of the firebox, so there is nothing really to suspend any baskets etc from the ash container.

I have a few ideas, but I wanted to make sure I get the right kind of metal parts to use in the firebox, where temps could exceed 450*.
What metals are good and safe to use for firebox mods? Is brass ok, or how about chromed parts?
I know galv or zinc plated items = possible medical services required, so... I wanted to know what to ask for when I go to the supply house.

    Thanks again!
  2. On FoodNetwork, "Down Home with the Neelys" just featured the CGSP.
They were using it without mods; I explained to my wife some ideas, (baskets, dryer vents, etc) - she looked at me like I had lost my mind.
(The concerned look on her face was priceless...)

The next brisket that I pull off the smoker aughta settle any concerns right quick! [IMG]

I guess some of the older models didn't have rails in the firebox. They had bolts instead. I have seen some posts on the various forums where people used those bolts to hold their basket.

Look for the bolt holes in the firebox. You may need to punch them out yourself if they have never been punched out.
  4. I found a propane tank secure bracket (basically a steel rod bent 12" square to secure the propane tank for my gas grill) ~ hooks hang on the front, purchased 2 brass bolts to hold it up in the back... the lowe's shaker basket should hang nicely from there!

Now I'm off to rub them grates down with a stiff-wire brush, and reseason the thing, and its time!

chrome is just a plating, will come off just like the paint on the inside of the CGSP if it gets too hot, you don't want any of that in yer food

There's no paint inside of your CGSP.....if there is, burn it out! [IMG]
