fade into the background (as I have)
You haven't faded anywhere . I know the name , because I take full advantage of the resources .
Searching through old post I've seen you many times .
I've only been here a short time , and consider myself a new guy . A whole bunch have walked here and made it what it WAS , way before me . Never used to be the egos that we have now .
It's a shame really .

This has been asked before and the answer was no. There are many reasons why that is the answer. 1 we would miss lots of people that were here 10-15 years ago and taught alot of folks and that wouldn't be right.

OTBS is a List of folks that have gone above and beyond throughout the years so it really is an Hall of Fame per say.

As for a RIP sections we dont always know when people pass. When they do we put a banner on their profile that says RIP Gone but not forgotten.

The hard part about the forum as a whole is to decide what to have and what not to have. You could go crazy(As we have before) and end up with tons of useless stuff then we have to clean up and reorg.

If we didn't have OTBS then it may be a different story but for now I don't think we will be doing this.

I know I have talked to Pineywoods and ill talk with TulsaJeff about it. I don't think the decision will change but will advise if it does.

If you want to talk more about it please PM me and we will talk.

Lets keep the comments civil between everyone. Remember its hard to judge peoples intent via text so be patient with everyone.

Thanks.

As Brian said this has been brought up before and the decision was not to create it for many reasons. There were members here before the ones that I've seen brought up in this thread that contributed to SMF being what it is today. We kind of know many of these members have passed but we don't have actual knowledge that they have passed. An example would be daveomak we are pretty sure he has passed but we don't know that as actual fact unless someone like a family member or something comes on to tell us then how do we know? Who is it that would decide who belongs in a Hall of Fame? I don't know of anybody that has been here from the beginning to tell us who should be included so we would be skipping members that should be included. It certainly wouldn't be fair to those people to not be included. Some of the members that have been mentioned came to SMF without all the knowledge they left with what about the people that helped them learn what they passed on to many after they learned. I also believe there were a few Gatherings before we had the one here at my place I think it had just been quite a while before we revived them.

Well now I guess I'm sorry I brought it all up. I have to say that I do not understand all the vitrol towards our former colleagues. They will remain in my personal Hall of Fame.
I may or may not agree, but I will respect the moderators decisions.

As Rich said no need to be sorry. It's a cool idea and I liked it. I can see how it would be hard to fairly administer though. The vitriol you reference was shocking but thankfully isolated.

Just out of curiosity, when was this forum formed/founded?

It would be easy for a mod to create a locked thread and have a sticky note perse, as the one and one only posting or list for members who were an huge asset to this community.
Many many members here that I have learned from for sure, but to say they were all contributors like the list of past members that were named in the original post of this thread is unmatched. Not to say that when its time their names would and should be added to the list.
I say make the post, and let new members know that when a search of the page is done by them, that they will know the contents of those search results were from masters of the craft.

The lack of respect shown here by a member is disgusting to say the least.

Bottom left of the home page says 2004 - 2023 .
I've Googled topics and get a hit in the top 5 for SMF .
Looked at a thread from 2007 this morning . Way different back then
Everyone that hasn't viewed the format from those days should take a look .
A lot of work has gone into this from the start until now .

As the mods weighed in the OTBS tag really signifies those who have contributed a lot and met the spirit of the board in their posts. I originally thought the hall of famer a good idea but they make a good point. To your comment on respect I couldn't agree more.

I believe 2004 is when the site was first registered as it's own domain but I believe it actually started as a small yahoo group a few years before that but anyways.

I understand why the Admin doesn’t want the HOF designation. Just thinking, I wonder if they would consider something like “Eternal flame”? A small icon that would represent their contribution and the fact that they are not forgotten. Not all have passed away. I’m sure some just left the forum for various reasons, but they are still remembered. Just thinking out loud. For those that may have passed, an icon of an eternal flame burns on.

I as well truly miss our deceased members. I learned everything I could from them and it made me a better smoker, cook, and baker. One of my favorites was daveomak. He had posted a hilarious description of a gastric issue he had once. It was so funny that I peed myself laughing. I have tried to find it with no luck.

If anyone can locate it and direct me to it, I would love to revisit that post again. I need more humor in my life!

Thanks,
John
