Brand new smoker

Discussion in 'Roll Call' started by marissa, May 30, 2010.

  1. I am, that is.  I've been interested in smoking for a time, and today I purchased a smoker, seen below:

It needs some elbow grease so I'm reading up on how to bring it back to its former glory.

Welcome and enjoy, that thing looks to be in pretty good shape, fire it up and get to smoking.   Mike
  4. Thank you.  [IMG]   I have to share the story of how we got it:  it was advertised on Craigslist for $30.  Yes, $30.  As we were at the owner's house looking at it, another potential buyer showed up to look at the two Weber kettle grills she was selling.  Well, it turns out he is an avid smoker himself.  We chatted a bit, he gave me some start-up pointers, and THEN he transported the smoker for us in the back of his truck.  We have a mid-size car, so he saved us an enormous amount of work (and probably an awful lot of swearing on my husband's part).  Clearly, smokers are a good bunch of people.  [IMG]

Congratulations on your great find Marissa, and welcome to the forums.  I wonder what the odds are of the person that transported your new smoker for you is also a member here?  How cool would that be?

First off welcome Marissa to SMF. You'll like it here cause there are alot of really good folks that would just love to help you with anything to do with smoking. Now we like having new folks here to give a new prospective on some of the ways we do things around here. Now if you are really new then I would suggest that you sign up fir the 5-day E-course it free and it will give you the basics on smoking and a few recipes too. Here's a link to it:

then you will have a method to your newly found madness and believe me it will be a madness. Then when you start smoking things you will have to learn how to post the pictures / Qview

here. So here's a link to a tutorial on how to post your Qview so we can see what your doing.

Now the next thing you have to do is run out and get something to smoke. Then just smoke it and if you have any questions just post  them here and we will answer all your questions that you might have. Oh yea there's no stupid questions we were all there in the beginning and we just really like to help others enjoy the fabulous smoked foods that we do. So again

    Welcome to Your New Addiction

    What mballi3011  said LOL

Welcome Marissa, once the smell gets out, you will have more neighbors then you ever thought possible.

Smoking can be a really fun hobby, for the most part I smoke alone but when the wife decides to help out it just makes it that much more fun. You brought home a fine smoker for a great price. With just a few modifications you will be smokin with very nice results. Pls visit often and share your experiences, none of us are to good to learn. Well at least I'm not, :)

Welcome to the party! I think you will find that for the most part smokers are a good bunch of folks. We like what we do and we love to exchange ideas. Get that puppy fired up, she looks to be in pretty good shape.

Have fun, ask questions, and enjoy!
  15. Nicely done, Heliboy!  Thank you all for the warm welcome.  :)  I took pics of the inside of my smoker but have not uploaded them yet.  The previous owner gave me two bags of Kingsford Matchlight as she wouldn't be using them anymore, so I used them to fire both parts of the smoker to remove some of the initial rust.  I'm just pretending that I'm revitalizing cast iron.  So, it's still hot as I type, but once it cools down I'll clean it thoroughly, take some steel wool to the remaining rust, and re-visit the hardware store for some stove paint.

Thanks for the advice!  I'll post pictures of the whole process once I'm done.

ETA: Oh, I signed up for the eCourse and ordered the book "Low and Slow."
