I have a blue screen of death problem with my home computer
seems to be a registry file problem. it happened when I restarted my computer after an update. not sure if that caused it or not.
running windows xp. I cant load the recovery counsel because it is asking for an administrator password and I never even set one up
I really hate to format the drive as there are things on it that I would like to save.
is there a way around the admin issue to get into the recovery.
any help would be appreciated. please PM me if you have any ideas
thanks a bunch!

If you never made an Administrator password, run the recovery console and then when it asks for the Admin password, just hit the enter key. This should suffice and get you in. Once in at the command prompt, type CHKDSK /r and let that function run.

Also, if you can't get into the recovery console and you have the original XP setup disk, do a repair install of XP. This removes all the files associated with the XP installation and reinstall JUST THE OPERATING SYSTEM. Your personal files and 3rd party programs ARE NOT AFFECTED. There should not be any reason why you would need to reformat your computer. These are just a couple quick ideas from one computer geek, i'm sure the other geeks will chime in just as quickly.

For your benefit, check out my website in my sig, it will help you with specific instructions on running the recovery console.

Dito what Nutzman said. Definately run chkdsk first.... that way you know if there is any physical damage to the hard drive before you try to do a windows fix. Best of luck!

If hitting enter won't get you past the PW then go into your BIOS settings and I believe you can add one from there.
