Going to be an interesting year for new grills I think

Just saw an OK Joes Rider DXL that I was really impressed with, and already my Wallmart has the Bit Boss KC series and Lockhart that looks pretty sweet. Now if they just had a decent WiFi app. Not this bluetooth crap. -J

Cutting 2 of the 4 fan blades off auger motor

So I constantly have issues with pellets getting hung up in the hopper. Since I'm limited on space, I really don't want to just add more hopper height. So I was thinking, why not cut two consecutive fan blades off of the auger motor in an attempt to significantly unbalance it and cause vibration...

What type of temperature sensor does GMG use?

Does anyone know what type of temp sensor the GMG controllers use? I am going to use one of their WIFI controllers for a custom build, and the GMG probe is not going to fit properly. So without buying one just to figure it out, does anyone know what type it is? PT100, PT1000, K type, other?

    show me your hopper extensions

The problem with the Masterbuilt hopper is that it doesn't hold much, maybe 10-15 lbs. So I'm looking to build a hopper extension and wanted to get some ideas. -J

Bet 'ya don't have one of these!

Wanted to share my new pit. What happens when you take a Masterbuilt pellet smoker and combine it with a OK Joe's Highland... What do you think?

    PID controller questions

Question for those of you that have converted to a PID controller. How do you adjust your smoke output? or do you even need to. My understanding is that I loose the functionality of the "P" adjustment by going to PID. I guess I could use a smoke generation tube or something if I want more...

Do pellet smokers dry out meat?

I recently converted my Ok Joes Highland into a pellet smoker. I'll get some pics posted up, but after running some test runs I am really happy with the results. I have less than 5 degrees of temp difference across the grate. Having never worked with a pellet smoker before, I get the feeling...

First smoke on OakJoe's smoker bitter

As to not ruin ribs or a brisket I have been dialing my smoker in empty. I was comfortable maintaining temps with the help of a MYPIN PID control so I thought it time to smoke something cheap. So I grabbed a beef roast at the store and went to town last night. on my old electric I would usually...

Anyone with intermittent connectivity issues with ThermoWorks Smoke?

I have a ThermoWorks Smoke unit that I've had some trouble with intermittently loosing connectivity. Sometimes the receiver and the transmitter loose connection, and will not resync. I've tried turning off/on, going through the sync procedure, etc. They just refuse to connect even though they...

Ok Joe Highland. Having trouble getting consistent temp across grate

I've been trying to tune my new highland, And I built a baffle and tuning plate. I have also put a 3" elbow to extend the vent to the cooking grate. I am still seeing 25-30* temp differences from one side to the other. I built my tuning plate and baffle out of cookie sheets and they fit pretty...

    Farewell MES

My MES burned up on Thanksgiving day with about 5* temp left to go to finish the turkey. Luckily there was enough heat left in the MES to bring the bird to 160*. The turkey was good, but the MES is junk. the power unit burned up and probably isn't worth fixing. I will always have fond memories...

Help me out with slightly bitter flavors

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm thinking about this the wrong way. I am getting some bitter flavors with my MES30. I am using a DIY smoke generator constructed from a quart paint can a 3" elbow and a soldering iron to get the chips going. It's a simple enough setup. Inside the elbow, I made a...

How do you fine tune your smoke entering your smoker?

For those of you with external smokebox mods such as mailbox, paint can with soldering iron, etc., how do you regulate the smoke entering your MES? I personally use a paint can with soldering iron attached to an elbow... basically no different than a mailbox mod, but I fill the can with chips...

    Mod to my underpowered MES30.

Some of you read my thanksgiving stories and how I modded my MES30 to hit 350*, and also how I feel the heating element in this unit is grossly underpowered for the size of the unit. So my thought was to add an additional heating element to this thing as well to help speed preheat and recovery...

Lessons learned about the MES after Thanksgiving

One thing I learned today is the MES30 is grossly underpowered for cooking anything larger than 10lb or so. Today my ambient temps are in the 70's-80's and even after preheating the MES to 350* It never recovered after putting in a 19lb bird at 60*. The MES needs a larger element, even if it's...

    350* in a MES30? Yep. Here's my mod.

I will start off by saying that this mod will void your warranty and could well... smoke your smoker. I am cooking a 19lb turkey in a couple hours and as this is the first time the wife has allowed me to smoke the turkey, I needed to do my homework. Sure, the LiLi market and restaurant is...

problems with smokebox mod on new MES30... too much smoke I think

Let's see if I can explain this since I don't have pics. Just got a 1st gen MES30 from santa. I immediately modded it. I put a plate above the smokebox to deflect heat over to the left side. I also made an external smokebox using a 1qt paint can. I took a 3" elbow and stuck it in the hole in the...
