    Dad's Xmas Gift

I want to thank everyone for all their help. I made the first UDS for myself (mistakes included) and then I built my father one for Xmas. He needed all the help he could get so I included a BBQ Guru DigiQII on his Drum. Also included was a plate made by a friend of mine that does custom...

FYI on Rustoleum High Heat Paint

I spent a few days preping and painting a UDS as an xmas gift for my father. This was the high heat ultra semi-gloss. This looked great, but when i heated the drum up it got tacky. I have given it days and when cool it's fine, but when hot it is tacky. Now it's flaking off. I called...

    UDS Wheels

I'm sure making it is more fun, but just an FYI. You can order anything from northern tool and have it shipped to the store without paying shipping. My drum dolly just arrived and they called me for pick up. Many stores are dong this and definitely worth asking for something heavy. TNDawg123

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

Thanks for all the help. Today i took all of your advice and i'm holding steady on all 3 therms at 240ish. My main goal is to do as little as possible during the smoke. Do most of you get it dialed in and leave it or does it require constant adjusment on the ball valve? Just curious TNDawg

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

sorry let me clarify. I didn't mean the therm prob. I was refering to the electronic probe with the wire being dropped through the vent pipe.

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

hmmm. There doesn't seem to be a way to get a real solid reading. I originally had a 12" fry probe slipped at an agle through the bung hole. it wasn't air tight, but the tip was over teh grate. I was having trouble, for obvious reasons keeping the temp down. I have a digital probe and will...

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

Great. Thank you. Is it really 50 degrees hotter in the center with a 4" probe? That seems dramatic. Did you mount the probe directly under where the food grate sits?

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

I drilled a hole in the lid and mounted a new therm (decided the probe through the bung was not working). The probe is not very long. When there is no food on the grate it gave me the same reading as the oven therm sitting on the grate. Once the food is added it's much lower. 250 on the...

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

I have a dial therm mounted through the top. Do i need one on the side with a longer probe?

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

Thanks. I thought i had worked out the drum so this time it had a pork butt and a spare rib on it. They did not turn out well. I will have to mess with the temps and use less coal next time.

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

Today was good practice. The temps were eratic, but learned alot. I now have the temp on teh oven thermo (sitting on grate) at 230. The thermo in top of hood reads substantially lower at about 160. I didn't think the temp would vary that much. Next time i will bring temp up instead of down...

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

Not sure what the minion method is, but no I put a weed torch on the top of the coals and got them red hot and then i left it with the top off for a little bit. Once i was sure it was burning i covered and started trying to get temp down. I just put a thermo in hood with the small probe. It...

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

I had a 10# bag. It was my understanding that it didn't matter how much coal was in there b/c the airtemp was controlling the burn. Otherwise i would never get a 12 hour cooktime without adding coal. Am I wrong? Also I think I may be getting air through the small bung b/c the thermo is just...

having trouble with my first smoke! temps

I have two bung holes in my drum. The 2" bung has a chrome muffler cover for a stack and the small bung has a thermometer dropped in it. I also have an oven temp gauge on the center of the rack. the ball valve is almost closed and there is 10# of chunk charcoal and about 5 chunks of hickory...

Should I build a stand for UDS?

I just finished my UDS and have been seasoning it for a couple of days. I want to keep it in my deck, but was not sure if the heat was a problem. It doesn't seem to get that hot on the bottom, but just to be sure I thought I'd ask. Should I build a platform to keep it off the deck? If I do...

    Another Safety Question on Drums

Although I'm not sure that a reconditioned drum that has been run through an incenerator isn't safe, I agree that a new drum is the no hassle no worry solution. After a few days and a little digging I did find a company that sold new containers and as luck would have it they were only $40. So...

    Another Safety Question on Drums

I'm habing trouble replying so if this has appeard more than once I apologize. I have been offered two drums that were used by a spray foam insulation company. I've been told they are non-toxic and soy based. Would these be ok?

    Another Safety Question on Drums

I have a cousin that just offered me two FREE containers. He does spray insulation and said the chemical is non-toxic and some kind of soy based something. Yeah I have no idea. I'd like to remember my name after I eat so if there are any opinions on this drum please let me know. He suggested...

    Another Safety Question on Drums

I know this has been covered repeatedly, but I have multiple options for drums and I'm trying to decide. There are drums that have not been cleaned with unknown uses for $10. I also have a drum company in town that uses a chemical wash and some other process to clean the drums for other...
