Slightly dampened sand, not soaked in a liquid. Have you tried adjust your bottom vents, if you have any bottom vents, try adjusting them a little, but keep your top vent open.
Those would help maintain temps. Have you tried using sand instead of water in the pan? It takes longer to warmup, but it holds heat much better, but does not help with humidity. I think you'll have to try different methods to find your answer. It's all good my friend.

I only use RO lump (USA), and these are the reasons. Very consistent burn, Little or no sparking, very little ash at the end of a burn. I combine RO with hardwood chunks for my smokes. I always find it at Wally World, and I buy 8-10 bags at a time It's all good my friend.

The small amount of smoke that leaks out usually won't effect the end product. One exception to this is if you are smoking in a cold outdoor environment, then it's more of a heat leak than a smoke leak, It's all good my friend.
