But if I paid an extra $200 bucks to have a wifi controller(I did not), it didn't work, and the company wouldn't do anything about it, I would be angry.
Just like I would be angry if I bought a wifi thermo and it didn't work.
You can still get all parts for that Weber. They are super easy to work on and refurbish. You can get any info you need from the helpful guys at the Weber forum. Those grills will last a lifetime. Just look here.

I have my Weber...
I bought a Camp Chef DLX, and I have an old school weber as well. I told my wife I would like to keep both when I got my smoker, and she was a bit confused as to why I would even entertain the idea of getting rid of my Weber. She said it belongs on the patio.
Honestly the best thing is to just get him what he wants. If he is geeky, part of the fun is researching for the best deal for himself. We all want to optimize what we get for the almighty buck. I would have loved to get a super fancy expensive smoker, but had a budget. I got the Camp Chef DLX...
Started homebrewing about 1986.
Got my fist job brewing commercially about 1991.
I brewed commercially for about 12 years.
Won 5 awards at the GABF.
Calculated I brewed about 1.5 million pints during my career.
Everybody wants to be a brewer. Hard to make good money unless you have the money to...
Much to my dismay my wife bought a 5.5 pound brisket flat from our local meat coop. It is all small local meat producers. The beef is grass fed local meat. This is definitely not what I wanted to do for my second smoke ever, but I guess it is what it is. It went on the Camp Chef 24 DLX at 04:20...
Sounds like a good deal to me, and if you regretted not having wifi PID controller you could retrofit with wifi for $200.

I have already been looking at the sidekick. I just can't spend the money right now. My wife loves the idea of getting the pizza oven. It would be fun to have pizza parties on out patio once covid is done. I really like the idea of a flattop. It would be cool to have.
I just got a CC DLX 24. I love it. I have never had a smoker before, and have only used it once, but it was simple to put together, seems quality and worked flawlessly. I am looking forward to many more cooks with it. I am sure you will enjoy yours.
Got my smoker today, built it, burned it in and smoked some Chicken thighs to 165, then 3 minutes on a side on my gasser to crisp up the skin. They were great.
So you don't use a cover at all? Is your grill stored under something? I can get Bear Mountain pellets at a nearby tractor supply store for $9.99 for 20 #s. I will probably try a couple flavors of these. Are there any flavors you like best?
I will probably start out with some low and slow pork...
