    I use a Fiskars splitting axe, the biggest one, and a sliding compound mitre saw from Harbor Freight to cut my splits down to size for my Lang 48, it works very well. I only use Hickory, which may not be as hard as oak, but it still works well on seasoned splits.

    I would say if you have all the smoke you want you either have to wrap the meat or just use charcoal. However, I've never had too much smoke from using only splits, especially if you have a clean hot fire burning.

    Why not get both? The kettle will be better suited towards grilling and shorter smokes. I've never used a WSM, but I've heard nothing but great things about them, I'd guess if you want to smoke butts and briskets the WSM would be the better choice.

    I second the Pecos, I had a Wrangler and thought it was pretty good for the money, would have been nice to have more space like the Pecos has, even though the metal isn't as thick, it's still the best thing you can get for the money.

    The temps are hottest near the firebox, and right where the stack is, I tried not to place anything right near the stack if I could help it, but maybe using a tuning plate with a water pan underneath it would help even out your temps.
