Newbie smoker from Canada - Masterbuilt 30" Electric

Discussion in 'Roll Call' started by canadiantex, Jul 20, 2013.

  1. I am really excited to get into some serious smoking.  I have been using my propane BBQ and a smoker box to try and get that great smoke flavour but I was just not happy with the results.  I decided to get serious and this morning I took the plunge and bought a Masterbuilt 30" Electric.  She (Betty) is seasoning right now.  Thanks to texacajun for the article on how to do this.

Tonight I am going to try some side ribs and tomorrow I will take a shot at brisket.  Hopefully things turn out.

Looking forward to being part of the community here.

    Happy Smokin.

You should sign up for Jeff's Free 5 day E-Course, and it's great!  This is chock full of great matter what your experience level might be!

If you didn't read the "Terms of Service" notes.....please do.  There are a few things that everyone should know about those pesky little rules before plunging into the forums and some guidelines of how to interact within the forums. Off site links are not allowed here at SMF per Jeff in Rule #11. Not that you have done anything wrong....just a little bit of FYI for new members!

  3. Thanks Kat.  I might try out Jeff's e-course.  Sounds like it will be helpful (and might save some embarrassment with my family!)

I let you know if I have any questions.

    Bye for now.

    Welcome Canadiantex !!!

If you're interested in some "How to Step by Steps", just look at the bottom of any of my posts (My Signature). They are all designed on an MES 40, so they should be helpful to you.

  5. Awesome, thanks Bearcarver.  That Prime rib you did looks delicious.  Nice work.  I bet those beef ribs were awesome.

I think I will have to try and find an AMNPS up here in Canada.  I bought the MES to reduce the babying needed during the smoke and this sounds like it would help dramatically with that.

I appreciate the pictures as well.  It helps to see how you rigged it up to keep the drippings off the element and AMNPS.  I will also line my drip pan and water pan with tin foil as you have done.

I am searching  the forums for any tips on how to rig up my MES.  Any suggestions would be great.

    Welcome, fellow Canadian. [IMG]

I'm sure you will enjoy the forum as much as I have.

  9. Well, it was a full weekend of smoking.  Ribs on Saturday and an 11 lbs Brisket on Sunday for the extended family.  They both turned out reasonably well and I can definitely improve on them with the help of my friends at SMF.  I will post my experience with the brisket with some pics.

Thanks for all of the great information out here.  It really helped me out with my first weekend of smoking.
