Around here we have what I call "Metal Pickers". They are folks that drive around on the day before trash set out day and also on trash day and scavenge anything that's metal in the junk and turn it in for it's salvage value. I stopped one about a week ago and asked him if he ever saw Weber grills being thrown out, to which he replied "Every now and then." I told him that I'd give him $10.00 for every lid that he brought me and he agreed to do so. Well yesterday I received my first lid from him and today he brought me another, promising at least another two in the next couple days. I've already received so many requests for smoked meats from the people that my wife works with that I figure that I'm going to need at least another two drum smokers for myself and I decided to build another one to take up to our lake place for when I feed up to 50 people on holiday cookouts.
After that, I may just go into business building and selling a few of them. Oh.......I forgot to mention, my buddy across the street told me that he can get me all the brand new drums I want from the company he works for, for $30.00 apiece. No burning or wire brushing, just a good scrub, a rinse and a seasoning cook and they're ready.

That sounds great! You could make money by selling a few UDS's once in a while, and have fun building in the process. Nice hook-up on the Webber lids too...

Good going John! Bet you could sell them as fast as you could build them. [IMG]

Hey, sounds like you are all set and good to go. Make it happen, and good luck to you, bud! I'm sure in no time you'll be selling UDS' all over the place.

I just wonder how many people are looking at their Weber Grill saying I know it had a Lid yesterday when I was putting out the trash...[IMG]

The part that makes me think he may be helping himself to peoples lids is the fact he is telling you in advance when he will have them...[IMG]

Either he is clairvoyant or he is getting them out of back yards and not from the curb...

Hey! Anybody seen my Weber lid?[IMG] Juuuuuuuusssst Kidding[IMG]

You might want to reaffirm with the junk man that these lids are junk. Just because he says he will be getting more is not nessasarly a bad sign. He may have a source that is lagit. I know of a couple of places that have huge piles of semi organized scrap for spare parts. A mountian of bicylcles, a pile of push mowers and yes, even a yard full of grills (I am gonna have to go by and start looking for lids myself) Except my junkmen think they have gold when I want something

I'm pretty sure that the lids he's brought me so far are have been set out to the street as trash. The first one has so much dirt caked on it that it looks like it was buried in mud and the secone one has the wood gone from it's handles and the vent is dented and needs some hammerin' to get it to turn again. As for the others that he said that he'd bring, he also contracts with banks to clean up abandoned and foreclosed houses and he's probably seen some grills at those houses and because he hauls metal to scrap yards and sees what's hauled in from all over the city, he may even get some from scrap metal that's already been hauled in. If he starts bringing me any that are in too good a condition, I'll question him a little more closely.
Flint is a city with a population of over 100,000 and over the years I've seen Webers set out to the curb. In fact, I've picked up 2 lids myself long before I'd ever heard of a UDS for use over my campfire cookin' pit up at the lake.
