firebox mod help

hey everybody i was wondering if anybody ever used a clay brick laying on its side, with the charcoal grate sitting on top of it  for better  airflow in the firebox...i was also thinking of drilling carriage bolts through the side of the firebox and having the grate sit on top of that for better air flow....i was wondering if they galvanize those bolts... if they are safe to use.... thx
