Hello I am new here but I have been smoking for about 5 years with a Bradley Digital smoker. I wanted to try a propane so I bought a Landmann 3605BGD. I was needing to know what type of wood do you put in the cast iron box chunk or chip or pellets or does it matter. Thanks for any help I will formely intro myself in the next day or so .

Welcome to SMF glad you joined us. Congrats on the new smoker.  Either will work but the chunks will generally last longer. At times I'll use both at the same time

Thanks for the quick response. I have a couple of questions if I may. What does OTBS stand for and what part of FL are you in ? I am in north Tampa

First off welcome Keith to SMF. Now for your woods I would agree with Jerry and say that you could use either or both. I like a good size chunk of Hickory and then use apple chips around that. It's a good mixture and you get some of both worlds too. Now you'll like this place for there are alot of good folks here that would just love to help you with just about anything to do with smoking. There's also some really good and tried and trued recipes here too.

OTBS stands for Order of the Thin Blue Smoke its an honor bestowed upon some members here when they have met the criteria and are selected by our staff. I'm up in Crystal River or up near Tallahassee depending on my schedule

Congrats on your new big block, you'll be glad you have the extra room when smoking. Keep an eye on the cast iron box, if your wood of choice does not completely turned to ash, it may not be getting enough oxygen, you might consider a different type of fire box. It's all good my friend.

good choice on the big block,  i also went from aa bradley to the gosm and am very happy, it holds lots more grub and you can use real wood not just those wood chip disks, which were not cheap!

you can use chunks, chips old disks or any wood in that pan    for long smokes put in chunks but quick smokes use chips home depot has hickory or mesquite and it is easy to get fruit woods from bbq stores also find some orange groves and get orange wood it has good taste to it  just have fun   and always make too much food!
