Hey everybody

So  yeah, i'm new here and to smoking.   A few months ago I got a Brinkmann smoke and grill.  It's been a hassle to use, but I've gotten a couple good things out of it.  Guess I'll go ahead and ask a question while I introduce myself.  I'm having trouble keeping the temperature up, and from what i've read here and elsewhere I decided to put some holes in the charcoal pan to increase air flow.  Lets see if I can figure out how to put a picture of that on here:

Yep, that was done with a nail and the back of a screwdriver.  I'm a college student living in an apartment so I have absolutely no tools and my main concern is that the manager doesn't notice my smoker going on the balcony.  Anyway, let me know what else I can do to make it better given the lack of tools and space, thanks!

Welcome to the forum!  That mod you just accomplished is the first step in keeping that little smoker even tempered!  The next thing I would do is take the legs off (from the inside) and move them to the outside of the unit (screwdriver and pliers will work).  That will mean that the fire bowl is now free and no longer supported by the smoker body but a couple of bricks will work very well to hold it up inside where it belongs.  Doing this will allow you to lift the entire smoker up and away from the bowl making it so much easier to add charcoal (lump only, please) or wood as needed.
