Stocking up on meat

I noticed in the grocery store circular that baby back ribs were on sale.  I thought it would be great to stock up and throw them in the freezer for future use.  But when I looked at the small print in the ad, it said "previously frozen".  Generally speaking, the meat in the case in the store when you go to buy it is thawed and ready to use.  Does that mean you can't re-freeze it?  If I do, will the quality of the meat deteriorate?


To make it worse, we have no idea how many times the meat has been frozen, thawed, and re-frozen.

 

Has anyone noticed this before?  What has been your experience with meat that has been "previously frozen"?

I have heard both sides of that story. Some say you can only freeze and thaw the product twice and I have also heard people say recently that they have disproved that theory so I am not sure what is right or not. Myself if I freeze something or buy something frozen once I thaw it out I don't freeze it again. I may be wrong but it seems the meat isn't the same once it has been frozen and thawed a bunch of time. Kind of like your beer once it gets warm and you cool it again its just not quite the same. Again that is just my personal opinion from my experiences. I'm sure someone will be one here soon that will know the science behind it and can give you some good details.

If you talk to the meat manager or butcher ,they probably have some product available in the back that is still frozen.After all they don't put it all out at once.

 i don't worry about if it has  been prviously frozen. I buy it ,bring it home vacum seal it and freeze it.

I believe the quality of the meat will be more greatly effected by the amt of time it is in your freezer and the way you wrapped it then if you bought it previously frozen and refroze it.  Do you purchase the meat and bring it directly home?  I have not gotten into the habit yet but I believe a good step would be to place the meat, milk, eggs etc in an icechest for the ride home if you are more than a couple of minutes out.

I too have bought meat and then re-froze it. Now I think that most of the meat we all get has been prevously frozen so. We live in Fla. and I know that most of the lamb we get is from New Zealand and I don't think that they got it to the store that quickly. So I also stock up when I find meat on sale. Maybe that's why I have a freeze farm (3) in my garage. One for Beef and one for Pork and one for Poultry and Fish.

Freeze farm. LOL. Do you raise them from babies?
