Gene those are great looking sandwiches - I could go for one right now

I love a Cuban Sandwich and do make my own, but I do have a problem finding the right bread..Once I made one everyday for a week..

On mine I use Pull Pork, Thin sliced Smoked Ham, Baby Swiss,Kosure Slices and yes I do use Mayo grilled on a good french bread and cut on an angle..and a cold one at 36 *.

I have made these before and they are wonderful even if they are not really a Cuban sandwich. I call them Cuban  Burgers.

I am a fan of the Silver Ring in Ybor City in Tampa. We have an office there and I never fail to get a Cuban when there.
Cuban Sandwich
This is far from a Traditional Cuban Sandwich. But it's my recipe and we love them.

Hamburgers , Cooked on the grill
Onion sliced very thin
Mustard
Mayo
Ham sliced
Pickle, Drained Good I like the stackers and about 4 per Sandwich
American an Mozzarella Slices
French or Italian Bread sliced in pieces big enough to cover the burger.
Tin foil
Bricks or a 16 inch walk block 1 inch thick. No I haven't lost it yet.
Butter

Now that you have the bread sliced, butter the top and bottom on the outside and here is the best way to build them from the bottom. Bread, cheese, pickle, cheese, onion. burger, two slices of ham, squirt of mustard, dash of Mayo, Slice of cheese, and top. Now here is the good part. Wrap the sandwiches in tin foil and set them back on the hot grill , Now set a brick on each one of them to weigh them down, or set 4 on and set the walk block on them. 2 minutes on either side. Pull the block or bricks off , flip them over and put the weight back on for 2 minutes. Take them off , peel off the foil and MAN!! These are fabulous. Serve with fries, slaw , potato salad or any other festive side dish you like.

A traditional Cuban Sandwich contains a nice slice of Roasted Pork instead of a Hamburger. Try them with pork, YUMMY !!!

O.K. as promised I had a cuban sandwich today from a local Cuban/Puerto Rican restaurant called Tapas that is right down the road from work that I eat at frequently. The roast pork they make is killer and the key ingredient in this particular cuban sandwich. The bread they use comes from La Segunda Bakery which pretty much supplies all of the cuban bread for Tampa. La Segunda means The Second in english, and was opened in 1957 and is run by 3rd generation family. The Primera which means The First in english opened in 1915 but due to a fire had to be rebuilt. I have attached a couple of pictures for you, hope you enjoy, I sure did. This was one messy sandwich as the juice from the pork was running all over my fingers mixed with the butter from the toasted bread. I am stuffed, I think they loaded me up today. I also included the standard recipe for the traditional cuban.

Cuban Sandwich:

-Cuban Bread

-Baked Ham (Not Boiled)

-Cuban Style Roasted Pork (Shredded not sliced)

-Swiss Cheese

-Sliced Pickles

-Yellow Mustard (Never Mayonaise)

-Butter

Sandwich can be served cold or pressed. Pressed is the way most latin people eat them. A Plancha or press is used to flatten the sandwich and steam the meat and chesse together. A pannini press or similar item can be used and even foil covered bricks can be used.

I included todays newspaper in the first picture so you can see this is authentic and you might be able to make out todays date as well.

I watched Bobby Flay do a throwdown with a guy who was famous for his Cuban Sandwich and they both looked great.  Flay lost of course.

The recipe they used is almost identical to yours except the winner used mayo and Bobby used a mayo mixture.

I agree those look great...

Man those look good - gonna have to see if I can find me a bakery somewhere in So Ca that can pull off the bread - thanks for sharing
