I am starting to build another smoker. It is a 275 fuel oil tank (it has been washed out and empty for 2 years). I plan on making it wood burner with firebox located on the back side of the smoker at the bottom. I want to have the capabilty to smoke a whole pig and have several racks in for cooking ribs,shoulders, briskets and smoking  venison sausage. It will be mounted on a trailer for towing.


The dimensions of the cooking chamber is:

3' 8" inches high

2' 4" inches wide

5' 1" inches long


Here are some questions i have about it.

1. how big of a fire box will i need?

2. will i be able to get it hot enough just using wood ?

3. How do i calculate the number of stacks and size of stacks?


I appperciate any help with the math need to figure this out as i am not the best at math.


will post some pictures of the tank when i get it off the trailer it is currently laying on.

Basically figure these tanks like a square box.  just cut a little off the height because of the rounds. 


I figured it as:

3' high  (just a guesstimate)

2' 4" inches wide

5' 1" inches long


Which is 61,488 cubic inches.  Rule of thumb is 1/3 of that size for the fire box which is 20,291 cubic inches.  That is roughly a fire box that is 27.5" x 27.5" x 27.5".
