lower smoker temps without controls

Just got a cheap Brinkman...has a heating element with no controls on it and it gets the think up to 250 degrees, too hot. How can I lower the temp?

Run your ECB with the intake vent allmost closed to closed and the exhaust vent fully open.

try that and see if your temps don't come down a bit. alltrhough 250 is not to high to smoke at.

You definantly need to get a better thermometer than the one that comes w/ the ECB.

Thanks I'll give it a try. There is NO thermo on my unit, I use one with a probe hanging around the grill space. I did smoke a pork shoulder yesterday at 250 and it turned out great...but isn't it too hot for brisket?

Nope.  I prefer to run my brisket at 225*, but 250* will work just fine for brisket.

Do yourself a huge favor and get good thermometers.

This electric is pretty much governed by ambient temps and the power cord gauge you use. You will have a hard time getting lower temps, but 225 to 250 will cover a majority of anything you will smoke.
