Getting ready to smoke my 1st butt this weekend. --- Now with QVIEW! :)

So I've only done ribs and such. Had a blast. I'm going to try to smoke a small butt this weekend (thinking about 5 lbs or so).

 

I read the pork sticky so I'm pretty confident all will go well.

 

Any thoughts on a simple rub? I don't have anything at home but was thinking a little salt, pepper, and mustard (sounds like mustard is good for bark, etc.). anyone do a simple brown sugar rub?

 

Probably will spritz it with apple juice as well.

I was thinking the same thing this weekend, I am just hoping it is worth the work and the time.  I am still deciding if I should stay up late or just start very early.  I usually like to sleep in on the weekends, but between scuba diving and smoking it has not always worked out.

 

I am going to use Jeff's rub and either make or buy some slaw.  I was also thinking of throwing on a rack of baby back ribs since I have only tried spare ribs.  But now that I think of it some twice baked potatoes sound good also. 

 

I don't think this will ever end......

My sleep in is cured. I have a 18 month old boy who likes to eat bfast at 730. That and it's my wifes turn to sleep in..hehe. Scuba diving? Sweet. I dive as well but being I live in landlocked Greenville, SC not a lot of good ocean diving here (I dove when I lived in the Philippines growing up)

Now if your looking for a good rub I would subjest getting Jeff's it's really that good. Then if you want to theres some good methods on smoking a butt in wiki here. Some I would just rub the meat the night before and leave it in the refrig overnight. Then start smoking it at about 230°=250° and if you have any questions then just ask us here. We will be move then happy to help you guys out. Now for diving have you ever dove Florida's Springs and Cave Systems they can be really cool too.

Now with Qview!

 

Great success. Smoked it with oak chunks and hickory chips. Turned out awesome. I used a simple rub 'southern rub' or something like that.

I am actually going on a dive trip to the Philippines next month.

 

Turns out I waited to long and did not get a butt to smoke.  But I ended up with 3 racks of baby back's and they are smoking now.
