This is a continuation of my last thread "2nd round @ baby backs". There is a light rain falling right now and I have put some bbq baked beans on both for flavor and to test how my rig will run today. It has been steady @150 which is a lot cooler than what it ran in the snow?? I am just wondering if any of you could share some experience with smoking in the rain and what I might experience. I have company coming over around 3 and planned for dinner @ 530. Thank you in advance. . . . .

Rubbed these down late friday night, and injected them last night with apple juice. I will be using a combination of bourbon barrel and maple woods.

A light rain shouldn't set you back too much. Just watch your temps might have to build a bigger fire to compensate for the heat dissapatation the rain will cause. But other than that looks like you are golden!

Good luck and keep the qview coming!!

I am smoking a fattie and some ABT's right now in the rain, so far it is having little effects on my temps. I do use gas which I think is easier to control temps with, if yo are getting a lot of wind make a quick barrier to block it

150 sounds a bit light to me. I would up the fire a bit and put a shelter around the puppy if possible. I generally cook at 180 or higher. 225-250 when I do ribs. At the very least, I would expect the smoke to take additional time.
Only my humble opinion.

Thanks so much guys. I just added some more charcoal and a couple chunks of wood as the wind is minimal, checked on it 30 mins later and it was @ 260 so I should be pretty good. Just put the ribs on and the temp was 210, a little short of where I want to be but I'll take it.

A little over an hour of them being in the smoker

My rig. . . . got the chimney starter goin to get the temp where I want it.

2 1/2 hours in

Right now its running a lil hot, 275 so hopefully it slows down a little bit. . . . we'll see

Yeah looks good, I tried my frst attempt at smoking one rack last Thursday. It stsrted out ok with the temps being where they need to be, but I think I smothered the fire and / or used too many types of fuel. I ws mixing in regular charcoal, lump hardwood charcoal & hickory chunks. the temps slowly dipped to 180, 160, 150 (wtf !) I put more wood and lump in and it slowly rose and dipped again. I guess it'll take MORE practice to get the flow right.

Sorry if I hijacked this thread but looking at this and reading this made me ask what did I do wrong.

No hijacking at all. I have never used 3 different types of fuel, personally. That might very well be where the differential was. I always start out with a chimney full of kingsford hickory charcoal, and add 2-3 good sized chunks of wood on top of it. Usually does me pretty well, I guess the only reason why it was slow to temp today was that I didn't preheat the smoker. I did the beans first for an hour, temp was low @150. . . . after pulling them off I added half chimney more of charcoal and it shot up to 275.

Thanks for the reply, I guess next time I use only one type of fuel, maybe on Tuesday I'll do a small beef or pork roast. I'll post qview and details on smokin'.

Here are the rest of the pics from the cook. . . . .

Halfway through

Smoked Bbq beans

Shrimp skewers ready to go onto the smoker

Finished smoked shrimp skewers, bbq'd 3 of them

And here we have the finale of the Baby Backs

I gotta say I was pretty dissapointed with the baby backs. I guess it was just one of those days where they were taking forever. Then my digital therm kept fluctuating. It showed the internal temp one time @158, ten minutes from then it was @143 so that definitely threw me off. It also didn't help that it was past 530 and I had some impatient guests. Alot of things learned in this smoke and thank you to everyone who contributed
