Ok for you this is my 2 cents. I could care less one or the other. Regular straight wire grill maybe easier to flip stuff with spatula but man the dif isnt worth a mention. I have done 50 burgers at once on expanded and no prob so what ever trips your trigger go for it.

lol just pricing the store ones i guess im build one outa mesh less i find a SS wire shelf to chop up

IMHO, it depends what shape. If you're looking for a round, you can't even build one as cheap as buy one. And even if the materials are free, is it worth your time? I bought 22.5" Weber grates for my UDS for $16 each. My local Menards has the same size porcelain coated off-brand grates for $8. Can you build it that cheap? Not if you count the time involved and the shop resources consumed to build it.

well CountryBoy ima a stay at home dad so time dosent exist anymore very often for me.

and u must not have followed my link to my double barrel build 2 grates over size 22in X 36in to go in and they are spendy

cut my finger 1st touch at the metal yard 2 year olde comes out unscathed LOLOLOL but sheet epando mesh like 50 some odd dollars brand new.
