Pipe Burner install

Look at this picture, note the ceramic tiles, they may be porcelain not sure but I will check, they do have a finish on them sort of a flat look like stone.
They hopefully will keep the bottom of the tank from getting real hot when using the pipe burner.
The pipe burner is slotted halfway through the pipe every 1-1/2" and are cut halfway into the pipe, the pipes slits are underneath so the flame comes out of the bottom the tiles are 4" square and are side by side.
The pipe burner is about 36" usable (flame) length.

A few concerns

1) If they are under the thermal plate and break I can not get to them.

2) Another concern is are they safe when heated?

3) and if I transport the smoker they may come loose.

They will be secured with 2 strips of angle welded in place

Another option I had was firebrick I can get them shipped to Ace Hardware for free and they are $19.99 a pack the only problem is they are a tad thick and will almost touch the bottom of the pipe burner, possibly interfering with the flame.

and my last option was a piece of 1/8" steel held in place wit the angle iron, I was hoping if its not welded in place that it will not transfer heat to the tank as much as if it were welded, this would be the safest way but most inefficient.

I prefer the tiles because of the fit and I have enough for the job, can I silicone these in place, should I run another piece of steel to secure them?
If they break but stay in place that is ok.
I have tested the tiles and they keep the heat from transferring to the bottom of the tank pretty damn good.

I am Trying to make a pipe burner also from the post on weldtalk,
only I am using 1/2" black pipe since I dont think I need one so large.
I'm getting the large yellow flames like what you experienced with your second burner. Did you get that burner to burn better? Was it not enough air coming into the mixing chamber? Too big of an orifice? Any help would be great.

Just ordered a low pressure and another high pressure with the #58 orifice, the original one I drilled out to make the hole larger. This weekend is booked so I don't think I will have time to fool with it.
Meanwhile post some pics maybe I can help.

I would also use the 1-1/2" pipe not the 1/2".
