Well my search is over!!!!!!!!!!
A few days ago while driving North to look at a wrecked truck I was helping a guy with I noticed a small Propane outfit with a bunch of old tanks in one part of their yard. SOOOOO I was telling my buddy Ben we need to check this out and see if we can score a couple tanks for our builds (we both want one) well today Ben was off work so he drove up to see them and after some begging and pleading (I think he cried a little)

He convinced them to let us have a couple of their scrap tanks that they nomally have a guy haul to scrap. We hooked up to the flatbed and drove up today and this is what we came home with.

Two of these three 500 gallon tanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They look horrible but believe me when we are done with them they are gonna be purdy!!!!!
Loaded on the trailer

and back at the house

this picture looks like one big tank but its not!

It will be a couple weeks while we clean and get them ready to cut before we will start the real work. I have a bunch of stainless rack material (Like real heavy expanded metal) that we will make racks out of and we still need to decide exactly how to build the smoker itself. It will be reverse flow.
I am thinking about dividing it in half and putting the woodbox in the middle so I can use just one side or both I will be going over all the build threads I have saved (a LOT of them) and deciding how to go. I will keep you all updated on the progress

Those are some serious tanks. The split-in-half idea sounds and could be more economical for fuel. Can't wait to see the progress. Out of curiosity, how much does one of those 500 gal tanks weigh?

I am not sure but I will find out when I pull the tanks off the trailer. they loaded them with a small forklift with no problem and we moved them on the trailer pretty easy. I would guess about 350lbs to 400lbs

Sweet! Are they 16 footers? They look real similar to what my brother's competion cooker is made from (his was an anhydrous tank--not propane). He can cook about 40 spares at a time on it.

I've got some other pics of it. PM me if you'd like to see them.

Awesome find. My big tank still lays in the same spot where i fell off my trailer 9 yrs ago. I'm to chicken to cut it open. How will u attempt to cut into it?? Fill it full of water or??????????????????????????????

We have built several wood burning stoves out of old propane tanks.......yeah we take the valve out and fill it full of water, drain, and cut away. To me thats the safest way.

I was told to be careful of doing this because they still have the junk in them that makes them stink and once you water it down and drain the whole neighborhood will think there is a massive gas leak somewhere

Yes, you gotta love the smell of concentrated mercaptan. I've worked around the pump that was part of the delivery system and you didn't want to get it on yourself or your tools. They would practically ban you from the lunchroom.

And hey, remember Hoss, you got the gas pipeline crossing your property. Oh, that would cause a stir.

In the next large city north of here there is a yard with over 1000 used tanks all marked scrap of all different sizes but they will not sell them to you. What a bummer.

Because of a new city by-law I can no longer have a stick burner in my yard so my plans to build a smoker out of a 100 lb propane tank have ended. I tried to buy a scrap one from the Propane dealer, he had about 20 of them and even some the size of yours but wouldn't sell any as its now against the law to re-sell out of date tanks in our province. I also tried the scrap yard but the guy said they didn't have any even though there were some in plain sight. I noticed the ones they did have were locked in a secure fenced off area.

So faced with this challenge I have kept an eye out for one but to no avail untill I visited an auto wrecker for some car parts. They had several propane tanks laying about their yard, that had come from off of propane powered wrecks. The owner said he wasn't supposed to sell them but if one were to go missing........hee hee..

Wouldn't you know it, as soon as I didn't need one anymore I get it offered to me free.

So if you're looking for a source for a 100lb tank try an autowrecker.

It ticks me off when even begging won't get me what I want.
