I've got to make, or get to make, 9 fatties for Christmas! And more for the new year. It looks like I could get 8 or 9 on the MES 40. Anyone know for sure?

That will be a nice Christmas!

I would guess that if you were organized about it you could put 4 per shelf without any problem, so 16 total in the 40". I once had 8 butts in mine and everything fit well and they're about twice the width of a fatty give or take.

I would be sure to preheat first (and I would preheat higher than what you are going to smoke it at to adjust for the drop when you add the meat) and expect it to take a bit longer than it normally would. That much meat mass will "absorb" a lot of heat and will take longer for the MES to recover and get back to the temp you want it to smoke at.

Be sure to take some pictures to show us!

I think you are correct, I always preheat my MES's to 275° then put meat in and then set to the temp I want to smoke at and then add wood chips and I would also figure 4 per shelf so 16 total

I know you can sart stacking them and you could get like 20 or so. I guess if you place them just right you should be able to fit 9 but even if you cann't thy re-heat better then almost anythiing we smoke here. Well except PP.
