Hey everyone, new to the site, lots of good information here. I built a UDS, (actually will be a Christmas gift) and am smoking my first pork shoulder as we speak.

Here's the trial run (no meat) to see how it performed with lump...

Temp was all over, so I opened all the vents and had it roaring over 400 degrees to burn out any residual stuff inside.

Next I tried Stubb's briquetts...

Held this temp for 8 hours with about 10 lbs of bricks. I figured that was pretty good, so I'm attempting my first shoulder...

Ready to go on the UDS...

Waiting for temp to hit 195 when I'll remove it and let it rest... it's starting to snow, so we'll see how it turns out!

I guess once I know it works, I'll have to clean it up and paint it..

First, thanks for the welcome everybody, I've been enjoying the site. Yesterdays shoulder came out pretty good, but in my excitement, I forgot to take pictures...sorry bout that. I took it off at 2pm at 190 degrees, wrapped in foil, then in towels, and put it in a cooler. Imagine my surprise, when 3 1/2 hours later, the shoulder was still too hot to touch! Amazing! Everybody liked it, especially the bark, the inside was juicy and tender. Thanks to all for the tips I've read here!

Smokin-Jim- I used a weber charcoal grate found in Lowe's, and welded expanded steel all the way around it. The steel I found in Home Depot. They come in sheets of 12"x24", so I had to "splice" a couple of sheets together. I also trimmed the height of the basket to 9 inches. Here's some pics I took that may help...

This is a walmart pizza pan I used as an ash pan...

I welded washers on either side of grate...

Pan mounted with 3 inch bolts for airflow...

Expanded steel welded to grate at a height of 9 inches..

And add a handle, and you're done...

If you do not have access to a welder, you can bolt it all togther as well. Hope this helps...any questions please ask!
