turkey smoking?

I have a 17.5 lb turkey i`m going to smoke,anyone have an idea how long it will take at 275-300 degrees? thanks nudib

  • 8 to 12 lbs ………… 2 3/4 to 3
  • 12 to 14 lbs ………… 3 to 3 3/4
  • 14 to 18 lbs ………… 3 3/4 to 4 1/4
  • 18 to 20 lbs ………… 4 1/4 to 4 1/2
  • 20 to 24 lbs ………… 4 1/2 to 5
STUFFED (time in hours)
  • 8 to 12 lbs …… 3 to 3 1/2
  • 12 to 14 lbs …… 3 1/2 to 4
  • 14 to 18 lbs …… 4 to 4 1/4

I think the safest recommended for smoking is around 12lbs but could be wrong.

You may be safer halving it and smoking them like two 9lb'ers.
 
A bird of that size should be spatchcock (cut and layed flat) then you can smoke it at about 275 for about 30 minutes a pound and you should be fine. I have never smoked a bird that way so if I'm wrong. I'm sorry but there should be someone come thue soon enough to gve you the right times
 
I'm smoking a 20#er and put it on at 5:00 was at 37* just took a reading now at 6:30 at 94*. Im using a UDS with Kingsford charcoal, dont use that cheap stuff, it dont work well.
