Lots of wook chips left over from my last smoke

My last smoke was my first smoke. I had the feeling towards the end that I was using too many wood chips. This morning I was getting the smoker ready for my smoke today and saw this when I pulled out the chip tray. Check out all the unburned chips. I guess that confirms my question that I was using too many.

I've been reading on here that people use 7-10 quarter sized chips for each load 45 min to 1 hour apart. This is for the MES. So I plan on using that technique today.

Also, I plan on reusing a bunch of these. Even the black ones that are slightly charcoaled. Should that be a problem?
 
When I first started I loaded the chip holder to the top until I saw what you did. Now I just put a little in there just to make TBS
 
I add just a small handfull on each fill repeating the fill about every hour to hour and half. Seems like it gets it going to just a light blue smoke. When I'm done the tray just has a small ash pile.
