Should I buy this Electric Smoker?

Hi everyone!
I am thinking of buying a Royal Oak electric smoker. A place here is selling them for $59, they normally retail for $120. I currently have a Char-griller Super-Pro with the side fire box, but thought this might be nice to have if I don't feel like fooling with charcoal all day, like if I was needing to smoke a boston butt.

I have absolutely no knowledge of electric smokers, much less this brand.

What are your thoughts?

I don't have any experience with that brand but if your wanting a little less tending, no doubt the electric is the way to go. I have two el cheapo Brinkman Gourmet electrics, and a 40" MES. There is a learning curve to get the results you are looking for but I'm cooking some great Q on em. I also have a stick burner and a gas burner so I've had experience with all of them. I love them all but I end up using the electric much more than either of the other 2. Hope that helps.

i also don't have any knowledge of the whole electric thing but if thats the price why not give it a shot you dont have much to lose and you dont know you might just get a good smoker for jerky or dring out peppers and stuff. There are many uses for a smoker like that darn it I might just buy it.

I use a Smoke Hollow Electric (Menards) and have for some time now. Here are my expierences. I don't know much about the Royal Oak and a quick 'google' didn't turn up much but problems with them not smoking and no specs etc...

1. Is it insulated? If it is insulated that is a good thing. You will be able to keep temps, recover faster and be able to withstand a little breeze.

2. How many watts is the element(s) Depending on this, you may need to be prepared to do something different to develop smoke especially at lower temps.

3. Toss, forget about, destroy or something the temp gage that came with it and use a digital probe thermometer.

4. Depending on all of the above you may have a good basic unit that you can modify to make it work well. Most everyone mods their smokers in some way shape or form. I got 4 done to mine. (external smoke generator, external PID controller, temp probe hole w/ watertight fittings and a big rock in the bottom for thermal mass and temp recovery)

5. once you turn out some great Q, then you'll be hooked regardless what you use.

I purchased a SmokinTex unit which is often compared to a CookShack. I love the ease of use of an automatic electric. Just stick a wireless thermometer in and sit back and relax until it hits temp
Not sure about the one you are looking at but if it is anything like mine you will love it

Icemann, welcome to the SMF !! I have the same rig you are looking at, IMO the price is right. considering I paid $100 for mine. I have turned out some awesome Q with this rig. I love the convenience of the watt burners. There are couple of things that I have found with this model.
#1. Starting out I Fire the unit up to HIGH with NO water and the wood chip pan full of soaked chips. This will get the TBS going. Then I throw in whatever I was planning on smoking and add HOT water to the pan, which will drop the temp right into the 225-240 range, and off you go.
#2 You will notice once the smoke gets going there are some spots that are not sealed. The bottom of the door, I just jam some HD foil and that takes care it. Overall I would say it’s a good unit for the price.
