Grillin On The ECB...

Hey everyone... I have been lurking around here for a little while now, and as a new smoker I just had to join! Tons of useful information here!! I will post more about myself in a roll call post a little bit later, but for now I have a question. I currently am the proud owner of a 4 burner Brinkmann gas grill and a ECB smoker. I really want to grill some chicken up tonight, and I would love to use the ecb as a charcoal grill because let's face it, there is just NO better taste, well IMO anways :) So does anyone do any grillin on the ecb here? it is the gourmet model if that matters. I was thinking about moving my charcoal pan (which has already been modded) to where the water pan would normally sit. Would this allow my cooking surface to get hot enough for grilling?? Thanks for the input everyone!

Well, you will notice with this Original ECB, that it is call Smoke n Grill.

So yes, you can grill, sans the water pan. You temp control will have to be by time and the position of the fire pan. That's pretty much it. Even with the pan down low, if the lid is on, it will generate alot of heat. So watch it close.

You can either run the fire pan where the water pan goes, or use less charcoal and put it where the top grill goes and just put the grill right on top of that for a great sear. I've tried both with my ecb and either method is just fine. Try it, you'll love it!

That's what I do. Brinkman calls it a "Waist high grill" if set like that. You can also just set the outer pan, with the coal pan inside it by itself on a picnic table. It makes a decent portable grill that way.

I've been meaning to try and make Memphis ribs with it. Leave the coal buring on the bottom, but take out the water pan, and grill on the upper grate. Never got around to it though.

I'd have to agree w/ Backcountry about putting the fire pan on top and the grlll grate directly on that. On my ECB when I've put the fire pan in place of the water pan, it didn't seem to get enough air and the temps were pretty low when I was trying to grill chicken.

Better to go with the charcoal if you can.

Best of luck!
