Greetings from Philadelphia

Hi Everyone!

My name is David and I live up in Philadelphia, PA. I am brand new to smoking, although I am a better-than-fair amateur cook both in the kitchen and on the gas grill. I just purchased a Perfect Flame vertical gas smoker from Lowes about ten days ago. Last weekend I went right for my favorite type of barbecue - baby back ribs. I used the 2-2-1 method documented elsewhere on this site.

I was blown away. Mostly all we have here are the chain BBQ joints and my humble first attempt was as good or better than any of those. It did not rise to the level of some of the regional barbecue that I've had in the South (I used to travel a lot on business), but I was completely surprised at what I produced.

I have already leaned heavily on the accumulated wisdom of this group and I really appreciated it. You folks helped me decide what to buy and the method that I would use. I appreciate this more than you can know.

FWIW, This is completely different than what I do for a living. I am a self-employed network engineer and consultant for 15 years now. I try really hard to do stuff as different as possible from my regular job to try and keep sane. I cook, I do pretty ambitious home improvement projects, and I have been dabbling in woodworking. I also am an amateur astronomer and hack musician.

Thank you all again. My next project is probably going to be a smoked chicken. I promise to take pictures this time and post them to Q-Vision!

Ahhhhh....Good old Philly, I spent a lot of my younger years hanging out there and occasionally getting into trouble.
Welcome to the site David. Congrats on the new smoker and your first successful smoke. As I'm sure you already know, you're going to love this site.

I live in Northeast Philly in a little neighborhood called Northwood. If you know Philadelphia at all you probably have heard of Frankford, which kind of incorporates Northwood.

Have you visited our fair city before?

Sure have, many times and still haven't seen it all yet. Philly is about 1 1/2 hrs away from me.

Welcome David. You will find that most everyone here tackles do it yourself projects around the smoker and the house. The people giving you advice are very resourceful and kind. They have helped me a lot and I am sure you will benefit from their advice as well.

Keep smoking!!
