Everyone here enjoys seeing the qview so be sure to post plenty of pics.

As for aluminum I would think that it would be hard to work with as far as welding etc. Other than that it should work as they have made millions of grills over the years out of it and they generate a lot higher temps than a smoker...

Hey welcome to the group! It's great here. Just be aware if you're married your wife might get jelous that you are spending more time chating about BBQ than spending time with her!

About the aluminum tank, my rig is a homebuilt vertical made from an aluminum doughnut transporting case and an old beer keg( also aluminum ). I don't have a welder so I had to improvise and drill and rivet everything. So far I've had no Problems with anything that I fastened with the rivets, holding up to heat the very well. I've been able to reach temp of 300* easily with a turkey fryer burner in the bottom of the smoking box. THe beer keg is the smoke generator.

Right now I use an electric hot plate to smolder my wood.It works ok but I'd like to get longer smokes than 1-1/2 hours...looking into making the homemade smokegenerator that FASTEDDIE came up with.

Anywho...sorry got a little longwinded about my rig! Go for it with the tank! You just might have to use a little more brain matter to put it together!
