I have grilled for years and have dabbled with smoking but thought I'd start giving it a better effort on the smoking side. I found this website and saw that it contained a lot of good info. I have a Charbroil smoker/grill with the side firebox. My biggest problem is my grill does not have temp gauge, didn't know where to find such a gadget.

Welcome to the dark side, or at least the thin blue side.
You can find temp gauges in the grilling section but your best bet is to just get a thermometer with a probe and place that inside your smoke on the grates.
Stick it through a potato or drill a hole in a piece of wood so it will not rest on the grate and you will be fine.

Welcome aboard South.

Nt only will you find helpful information on the SMF but you will find a great group of people willing to help anyway they can.

As for a thermometer, you can pick up an oven therm, at just about any store that carries kitchen supplies for about 3 bucks. they hang off of an oven rack or can be placed right on the side of the grill.

Another reccomendation I would make would be to pick up a remote thermometer. They come with one or two probes which are inserted in your meat and connected by a heat resistant cord to a digital base outside your smoker and allows you to keep an eye on the internal temp of your meat without opening up the door and losing heat.

They are available under some of the links on the main forum page but you will probably be able to find one locally if you are inclined to look.

I found both available at our local Fred Meyer here in Alaska so in Des Moi nes, I am pretty sure you will be able to find what you are looking for without much trouble.

What's up SOUTHSIEEED (only he'll get that)

Checking in from here in Des Moines too. Grew up on the east side and now transplanted out to the west side.

You can find supplies (including thermometers) at The Fireplace and BBQ Center in Clive, in the same strip mall as Mickey's Irish Pub. Or another good place (with more stuff) is Hawgeye's BBQ out in Ankeny.

Those are also the only 2 places I've found locally that carry Seven Oaks Lump Charcoal. Grab yourself a bag of that for your next cook.

Enjoy the site. Lots of great people on here and lots of folks from Iowa.

reply to Cajunsmoke

Hey Cajunsmoke,

One of the places I like to hit once in a while is a local joint called Jethro's BBQ http://www.jethrosdesmoines.com/. The q is decent, nice size portions, great atmosphere if you like sports. Lots of tv's, nice patio and cold beer.
