I really do like my Horizon smoker BUT I'm not crazy about the therms. The first ones that came with the unit was off by a large amount, better than 100 degree, and Horizon was great about sending out replacements. The bad thing is; the new ones are no better.

OK now. Where does one get a good price for a Tel Tru model BQ300 with a 2" stem?

Thanks in advance.

I got the inexpensive 2" and 3" with the blue and red zones from these guys, they work great

If you look at my pics in THIS THREAD you'll see that my thermos are in concurrence with each other. BTW, they are also in concurrence with the original CGSP thermo, which takes a few minutes longer to respond but after adjustment IS somewhat accurate.

I have three of the non-adjustables and they work well enough for me. I'm not going to upgrade, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd buy the adjustable ones. For the price, they are good. The $6 char-broil that I bought from lowes for my kettle lasted less than a year. These still work.

Rick, I must say that your Horizon is one gorgeous unit. I'm just curious about one thing and that is why are the two therms located so far up on the door? Would it not be better to have them closer to the grate? The inacurate therms might be a problem that won't go away. Maybe a probe therm thru a block of wood or spud might be the answer.

Mikey,

I'm not to sure as to why they placed them so far up. These Horizon therms are adjustable but after I did calibrate them they never read below 150F. They do however read fairly accurate when over 200F or so. I calibrated them to read the lower grate temps. This is where most of my cooking is and will be. As it is I use my digital therms too.

I inquired about the Tel-Tru because I have heard so many good things about them. I could certainly live with the originals but as I'm sure most here understand we tend to get a bit anal about such things as important as proper reading therms.

You had me wondering Mikey if other pit builders do the same as Horizon. Well there are others that put the therms up high like mine. Lang seems to do the same.

Same go for Gator pits.

So it seems to be a common theme with some pit builders.

My guess is that they expect you'll be cooking on the high shelf as well as the low one, and that you therefore need that reading as the most important. It's obvious that the lower shelf will have lower temps (though not by much).

The therm on my drum is a tel tru. On mothers day when I did that brisket I had my ET 73 just above the Tel tru under the grate. They were reading the same. I am happy with my tel tru. I got it from Bubba at the link grothe gave you.

Go with the Tel Tru, Rick. No sense in risking an expensive smoker load of meat on a cheap thermometer. Course, since you have to buy two, I can understand your hesitation.

But the black face with stainless steel rings look awesome on a smoker..

I fired the Horizon up this afternoon to cook up some chicken thighs so while it was up and running I checked out the temps of the lower and upper shelves. This was one right above the other in the middle of the smoker.

Here's what I found.

Then a bit later.

So I guess the position of the therms up high like that is ok. Both shelves run the same.

What I wish is; there was a therm like the Taylors, which I really like, that you could screw on like the dial therms. Now that would be sweet.
