This one is a little harder to answer I think but what can I look at in the way of wood usage. I know there are a 1000 variable involved but lets say using oak to cook 5 racks of ribs with the 3-2-1 method. How often do you add wood and how much each time.how much wood to get the smoker up to temp....Its an 84 so it has a large area to heat. How long does it usually take to heat up before cooking..

The last smoke on my 84 we started with about 6 splits and then added about 2 splits every half hour to fourty minutes. The splits were oak and just over magnum beer can widths and about 16-18" long. This off course changes with how dry the wood is, what type of wood, the outside temps etc

Do you start off with any charcoal or aything or just the wood. On my small smoker that I ahve now I usually just use some small splinters and some news paper or something to get it started..

i start my lang 60 off with about 5 lbs of charcoal with 4 good size sticks about 16 inches long and build from there. it takes me about 1 hour to get it up to 250 degrees with a nice bed of red hot ambers to start my smoke. from there i use about 1 or 2 sticks about every 30 to 45 minutes. hope that helps you out.
