newbie from Colorado Springs

Another newbie to the fine art of smoking. The wife and I moved to Colorado Springs a little over two years ago and we love it here.

I just purchased a Great Outdoors smoker from the local Walmart for $99. This is the unit I have, http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=3342508 I got it at the recommendation of a friend that has been smoking for a while using the same unit. He's been able to get me started. I have done three smokes already. My last was a flank steak with a simple garlic, salt, black pepper rub that came out awesome. Even the wife was impressed and ate twice as much red meat as she normally would.

A bit more about myself. I have been brewing beer for over 15 years and have built all of my own equipment. I'm always looking for new ways to improve my gear. So I'm sure it won't be long before I'm hacking up this smoker to make it better. It's just in my nature. :)

I love it so far and after my last smoke I have full support from the wife.

At first I thought I was being cheap buying the GOSM 3405BGW. From the sounds of things, this is a very common and very capable unit. Phew!

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Welcome, Scott. That is one of the great things about this site, lots of people that will mod out there rigs and make them better and more efficient, so you have tapped into a massive collective resource of knowledge here at the SMF. Smoking meat is one of those areas where it is a constant experiment and each individual's tastes dictate if it was a success. It is a beautiful thing, and I'm sure you will fit right in. I used to live in the Denver area, and travelled to the Springs almost weekly. It truly is god's couuntry (except for the massive traffic snarls). Welcome again!

Traffic snarls? I just moved here from San Diego, as far as I'm concerned there aren't even other drivers on the road here. :)

Good point...I guess it is all relative to what you consider normal. I had lived there for quite a while, and trust me, it had changed. In fact, you couldn't throw a rock without hitting someone from California. PDT_Armataz_01_11.gif

Yah. I had a couple of great years in San Diego and wham... right around 2000/2001 the traffic got crazy. Before that you could drive anywhere in 20 minutes unless it rained or there was a game at the Q.
