First Charcoal smoker

I got a Home Depot gift card for 150.00 and a green light to buy whatever smoker I want and all of a sudden I'm having trouble deciding. I was originally planning on buying the Brinkman Smoke n Grill smoker with the offset box but our store just started carrying a vertical Brinkman box smoker for about half the price and it got me wondering which would be better.

I have been using an elctric smoker up to this point and have been pretty happy with it but I really want to start working with wood/charcoal. I have a gas grill that we use religously so the grill itself isn't a huge benefit. I am more concerned with which will be easier to maintain consistant higher temps. and give me a better quality smoke. I am never smoking a lot of meat at one time but hope to start using the smoker a lot more this year.

Any thoughts on which would be better would be greatly appreciated.

You'll probably find differing opinions on that one. Personally if I had the electric I'd probably go with the side fire box type but thats just me

I really like my offset. With a few mods they can be a lot of fun.PDT_Armataz_01_34.gif

Gotta agree with Piney~ and not just because I have a SnP. You've already got the vertical angle covered, why not try something new and horizontal? Sounds like that's what you are leaning towards anyway- something different. And as Azrocker said, they are a lot of fun!

offsets are a lot of fun, but they take time to learn, but i really enjoy the quest it brings every time i use it,

Thanks for the replies. I think I am going to go with the offset. My biggest concern was keeping the temp. consistent throughout the smoker. AZRocker, I noticed your smoker has a gauge on both sides and I think that is a mod I will have to make to this one right away. I have also seen some posts about extending a piece of metal from the fire box on the inside to prevent one side from getting a lot hotter than the other.

I'll let you know how my first smoke goes with it.
