Question about Hickory

A guy I know from work is thinning out some trees he has in the woods behind his house. Most are small hickorys. He says they are about 4 inch's in diameter. Will splitting these help them season quicker, and how long do you expect them to season split or unsplit? Also how soon do I need to get them on the ground before sap becomes a problem. I'm in the little rock arkansas area. Thanks for the help.

Jeff splitting them will help them dry faster. As far as how long to season thats hard to answer as there are many factors to consider. Inside or outside, relative humidity, summer or winter, temperatures etc. The sap from a hickory shouldn't be a problem as there isn't much

I square up my rounds to the size they go in smoker and cure on wire racks for air circulation.I leave a good amount untrimmed for later use and square up as needed.Six months squared up 3x3 inch is how long i wait ,but you can pre-burn wood as well.I get my wood into my shed as quickly as possible.

I agree with what Piney said, but if you are looking for a good rule of thumb, I let mine season 6 months minimum before I smoke with it.
