This weekend I am going to smoke a butt, if I can find a good one. I am going to use it for pp. My question is . Is there a preference between just the butt or the butt and picnic together? Or what are the pro's and con's of each? Thanks for any advice in advance.

Just the butt should be plenty to feed a family of about 15 to 20. Usually 8 to 12 lbs. I like the cryovac whole butts as opposed to the butts opened and cut or trimmed by the butcher.

It will be the best pork anyone has ever tasted. Be patient!! Those things take a long time. Keep the temps low and the beer cold!!

Heres a quote from Pops6927

"Yes, the picnic is a muscle group that bears more weight and is worked more, so it's leaner and has a stronger taste than the butt, which is fattier and more tender with a milder flavor because it is part of structure but not directly to weight-bearing/motor functions."

Personally, I like doing them together.

Takes a little longer, but you get to blend the slight differences between the cuts into what i think is slightly better pork.
