recently purchases a broil mate vertical smoker from home depot for $150 been desperate to get a smoker for ages but was always planning on electric but never liked there size they alwasy seemed to small

found this guy and immediatly fell in love now as far as smoking meats goes this thing does wonders temps right in the 220 range when on low with vent closed all the way so no complaints there BUT................

I love jerky and have been making it in my oven up to this point and am wondering would placing a hot plate on the smoke box rack with the box right on top of it give me that 170 i need for jerky

Not sure about your smoker, but someone that is familiar with it will be along to help you with your question.

Welcome to the forum. :)

I haven't tried that method but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Should be able to adjust the heat of the hot plate to obtain the desired temp you want.

Yes, that will work, and work well. Done it that way a time or 3. Not on that model of smoker, but it doesn't make a difference.

I would get a 1000 W hotplate, you can always turn the heat back a bit if it gets too hot.

850 to 1000 watt will work great for this app.

I'm with Fatback Joe on this one. Also, if you plan on using it for jerky in colder weather the extra punch of a bigger hot plate should give it enough to get the job done.

Remember to never close off your outlet vent, the resulting stale smoke will not make for a very tasty smoke. Keep it open a least enough to allow for good circulation of the heat and smoke, then you'll be a happy smoker!
