This part of the country (South Boston) isn't really known for it's smoking expertise, so maybe that's why I wanted to get started smoking. I think there might be 1 decent bbq joint in most of eastern Massachusetts!
The kids got me started a couple of years ago when they bought me a Kamodo Kamado for a gift.
It's a great cooker.
I then bought a Bradley digital and 2 40" MES electrics. Buying these were under the guise of smoking sausages, but you people know better! I'm thinking of adding a Cookshack Amerique next and selling my as yet unused Bradley.
I'm a retired letter carrier, so I have plenty of time for my stuffing and cooking, after 38 years of lugging the mailbag around. I was lucky enough to be able to retire the day after I turned 55 and will be retired 5 years come January. Loving every day of it, between cooking and watching my 6 grandchildren grow up.
Some of my other interests and hobbies include home theater, satellite tv and computers.

Welcome fatguy. I know how it is when you're working all the time. I get maybe 2 days a month to smoke and grill. In about a year and a half that will change. Lots of good info here. Good luck.

Ayup, know what ya mean bout the lack of good smoke up here! Nice to know we have more smokers in the north!

Stay dry today, whew, a bit of rain, ay?

Hello, fatguy. I think you are wrong about there not being any good BBQ places around Boston;you have equipment to smoke so... BE the best in S.E. Mass.!!! Get that MES out and try some off the wall things , like Smoked Lobster Sausage

. If I lived on the coast as you , I'd be doing all sorts of seafood; just for fun(I know you can get it cheap off the boats) and to make your neighbors jealous. Gee, with all that time and all those grandkids, sounds like fun.LOL
Welcome to SMF!!!

Welcome to the SMF family. Looking forward to seeing some your smokes.

Welcome.
While back some folks here were lookin to see if anyone had smoked lobster. I looked around the web and found nothing. You know anything about smokin lobster? Times, temps etc.

Love Boston. What a great town.
Glad to have you here.

bbqfans,
Where I live is right on the coast, my house is 1 block from the ocean and 1/2 mile from the fish piers, and I hate to burst your bubble, but there is no such thing as buying off the boats, or cheap, inexpensive, whatever you want to call it, here in Boston!
I get envious when I see prices for packers of brisket for under $2 a pound in other parts of the country when they cost around $3.75 a pound around this area.

Welcome to SMF .

As for their being no good smoke in Boston read this post.

A member of SMF has opened his own joint in Boston and from the reviews by SMF members it is high quality smoke . Warning I started reading the Thread and it was 2 hours later when I surfaced from my computer screen. It is a fascinating read.

PS. Thats an intriguing Handle by the way. I have lost over 100 lbs but am still in the fat guy category.

GnuBee,
Had a gastric bypass last March and have lost 190 lbs. since then.
Feeling really good, but thinking of changing my handle to SharPei Man!!!

Gosh, I figured a fella could find a kindly skipper anywhere, but I guess it's a different game there!

Do you know anyone that owns a fishing boat or someone who does?? Maybe try to go down and visit some of the guys on the docks, (take a 6-pack or so ) and make some friends(hope). You never know till you ask.May take a while and ya might get the evil eye a few times, but eventually you'll find someone that'll say why not;maybe if you offer to do a smoke for them it'll loosen them up?

Anyway, good luck and don't be shy, dicker and barter, besides it's fun to haggle!!!

There may be a goldmine waiting to be found.

Hey, Formallyfatguy!

First of all congratulations and kudos on your personal achievement!

Now, as for a real Q Joint, head over to 153 Washington Street in Brighton, Smoken' Joe's. OTBS member JoeD617 has a really hopping place!

Check out his website! http://smokenjoesbbq.com/

Smoken' Joe's has live blues bands and Real Q! I used to run around that part of Boston but have not looked south since i moved to Vermont almost ten years ago!

Sometime soon I will visit there and I know for sure that if you make it known that you are a SMF member and ask for Joe you will be shown the red carpet!

Cheers!

Welcome to the SMF, smokin' and Q are just for you, especially if you're retired. I'm there and doing it too.
