Well, figured I posted in a couple other forums today so I better in here also.

From Michigan. Have been "smoking", kind of, on a Weber gas grill for about 5 years. Trying to figure out what charcoal smoker to go with. Had planned on the BarB chef until they told me last week they were discontinuing it. So now I am not sure.

Boy Scout leader, so I cook a lot outdoors and without conveniences. Do a lot of dutch oven cooking. Troop does most cooking over propane, but I use a dutch oven table and coal whenever possible.

Can't think of anything else pertinent right now. So, nice to meetcha!

I should explain the name. I am a scouter. I also am a geek that likes flashlights. Have too many to count. I don't need matches to start my charcoal. One of my flashlights can light newspaper to use in the charcoal chimney. Gotta love those kind of flashlights!

Welcome to SMF. There will be plenty of help here to help you decide on a smoker. Personally, I use propane. Some say that's not smoking, but the stuff sure tastes good from it!

Welcome to SMF...As for the smoker it's going to be what best fits your needs. I use a Brinkman SnP but it would be a little cumbersome hauling around...alot of folks here have the ECB and say it works great..just read alot of post on smokers here and you decide.

Welcome aboard Scouter,
A friend of mine has the small version of the GOSM. I think it's something like 36" tall and about 14"X14" in depth and width. He carries it on camping trips and it seems to work well. In the end, it's what you are happy with but the GOSM has turned out some great Q and being propane driven, it's a snap to get up and going and to maintain reasonable temps. Good luck!

My son got his eagle last year. The adults did a lot of cooking in dutch ovens and inexpensive portable cookers. You don"t have to spend a fortune to turn out good product. glad to have you.

Thanks everyone,

Congrats to all the Eagle parents! In fact, my oldest son will receive his next weekend! One down, one to go.

I look forward to reading more here. Probably won't post much unless it is about DO cooking. But I will keep my eye on all the smoker info.

Thanks again.
