Is My Butt Too Small???

While I have mastered alot of smokes, I have not yet tried a butt. Tommarow I will do a Trial Butt Run, Ribs, and a fatty. I have read all about the proper way to smoke butt.... In my readings, Ive noticed the butts are around 6-7 lbs or larger. Locally I have found a 3.5 lb. Is my small Butt gonna present any issues I should know about? or is there any tricks of the trade when dealing with a small butt? Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated!!! as always thanks folks!!!

Boy, how come Mrs Flash never ask me THAT question biggrin.gif

No, that is not too small. It may get done sooner, so keep a close eye on it. Then again, you never know with Plateaus. I had a 5 lber take me over 9 hours and an 8.5 lber take me 7.

Thanks guys!!! Im gettin ready to rub my little butt now... I read in a few places to keep the fatty side on the bottum while smoking.... do to the size of my butt, the fat is on the smaller side and it wont set on the fat side. Will I be better off to just trim that fat off, or leave i for some reason??? Thanks again!!!

Does this dress make me look fat?'s ALL by temp man. Size of hunk is pretty much irrelevant. Just be done a bit faster is all.

I did my first butt last weekend and that was only 4lb, took a little over 6 hours in the smoker but the finished product was well worth it :)

nothing wrong with a 3.5'er My first one was that size. Just be prepared for it to take as long as the larger ones. Mine went 9 hours instead of the 5 or so I was expecting. Though the next one I did was a 4 pounder that only took 6 hours. So, be prepared for anything!

Good luck, and don't forget the pics! biggrin.gif

My experience

I've done 7lb 8lb and 9lb butts before and just recently I did 2 that were 3.7 lb each. The only diff I noticed besides the time it took for them to cook (6 hrs) was that there was not as much juice in the foil as I would have expected. I'm just atributing this to the fact that the was not as much fat in these. They looked kinda lean. All in all the finished product was still great. But I now prefer the larger size roasts. I bought these when they were on sale for .99 lb. You might try foiling or panning them a little earlier so as not to loose the good stuff. That is what I am going to do with the three others I still have in the freezer, maybe foil at 160 instead of 170.

the butts i have been finding are running between 3 and 5 lbs. i think the local butchers are splitting the butts into two pieces because of market demand. I had a 4.8 lb'er take 12 hours last weekend. drove me nutsPDT_Armataz_01_05.gif
